Chapter 17

I know drug dealers that drug niggas in broad day…Tink

We rode for another forty minutes before my phone rung. I assumed it was Bella calling to check in.

“Hello?” I answered.

“What time are you coming today?” It was Mekkhi. I was supposed to re-up today and I had completely forgotten.

“I can’t come today,” I told him.

“Why not?” He wanted to know.

“Something came up,” I said, trying to be brief.

“Is King ok?” He pressed.

“Yea,” I answered. He was silent.

“That’s your exit,” Yaz told me. I swerve to make my exit in enough time. I was thankful that she caught that but I also knew Mekkhi paid attention to everything. He knew that if I was on the freeway I had to be outside of Corsicana.

“You’re in Dallas?” he asked, knowing that Corsicana didn’t have any exits.

“On my…” I answered.

“Come to the shop,” he said, cutting me off. Before I could respond, he hung up. I knew I might need him, so as much as I didn’t want to get him involved, I still went to his shop.

“Wait here,” I told Yaz.” When we pulled up to the shop, I walked inside and went to his office. As soon as I saw him, I wanted to cry. This was all too much, but I knew I had to be strong. He studied my face.

“What happened and don’t lie,” he said. I told him the entire story, including the fact that we had Mannie’s mother.

“What address did he give you?” He asked. “Go tell your homegirl to go back with Bella, you shouldn’t have left her alone,” he said in a parental tone. Was it insecure of me to wonder why he cared so much about Bella? I assumed it was and walked outside to tell Yaz.

He met me at the door before I made it back inside. We got in his car and headed to his house. He didn’t speak to me the whole trip. I wanted to say something, but I didn’t know what to say.

“I need to go get my money,” I finally said.

“So you’re just going to pull up at this unknown address in your car and go inside? I thought you were a thinker,” he said, shaking his head. “Don’t you know someone is going to see you and report it to the police when they start asking questions?”

So, he was mad because he felt like I made a stupid mistake? I should have trusted my instinct. I knew Bella would be off her game, but I didn’t change the operation. I knew Tiara was weak and would flip, but I kept her on anyway. And he was tied-in businesswise with me. I would be pissed too.

When we entered the house, he went into his office and closed the door. I didn’t know what to do with myself. I called and checked on King. When I ended the call, Mekkhi was behind me.

“We got the money. What’s the address to Mannie and his mother?”

“I don’t want his mother hurt,” I told Mekkhi.
